How it works
1. Paste your answer
Choose Task 1 or Task 2, paste the question and your answer. For Task 1, add the chart or diagram so your figures can be checked.
2. Measured against the descriptors
Your writing is checked against the public IELTS Writing band descriptors (May 2023): Task Response or Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.
3. See what to fix
Get a band for each criterion, a list of errors with corrections, and targets for the next band, such as "make 45% of sentences error-free".
What you get for each essay
- An estimated band for the task and for each of the four criteria.
- Every error with a correction and a one-line reason: grammar, word choice, collocation, spelling and punctuation.
- Next-band targets written in plain English.
- IELTS word count: titles and text copied from the question are not counted, and under-length answers are flagged.
- Progress history: see which mistakes keep coming back, per 100 words.
How accurate is it?
On 12 sample essays marked by IELTS examiners under the current descriptors, upband's overall band was within half a band of the examiner for all 12 and the same band for 7. That is a small test set, so read any score as roughly ±0.5. Criterion bands can differ by about one band on unusual essays. Even two trained examiners can differ by half a band on the same essay.
